Give You a Heads Up

Sometimes phrases are annoying just because. Give you a heads up is one of these.

We can’t quite put our finger on it, but when someone promises to let us know something in advance, we should be thrilled, right? The problem is they verbalize this by saying, “I’m going to be sure to give you a heads up.”

Well… thank you, we suppose. Does not telling us mean they’re going to give us a heads down?

We understand this means they’re going to keep us aware –  as in, when you have your head up, you’re more aware of your surroundings. Though just because we understand a dumb, overused business phrase doesn’t mean we can’t be annoyed by it.

And… annoyed we are.

This one is irritating because it’s become so widely overused to the point it may never go away. Your grandchildren’s grandchildren will likely make multiple, daily promises to “Give you a heads up.”

Thank goodness you won’t be around to hear that.
